Objective
The student: - Learns to perceive criminality as a broad social phenomenon. - Knows the research subject of criminology and different research methods of criminality and crime control. - Understands the research tradition keypoints in behaviour of criminality and it's control. - Is aware of the possibilities and limitations of crime reduction and prevention. This course unit develops the following generic competences: digitalization, ethics, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking
Content
Criminology is an branch of science that studies the causes, consequences, and prevention of crime. Criminology is a highly multidisciplinary field of research that utilizes, for example, sociology, medicine, psychology, education and law. Thus, criminology is not united by a certain method or theoretical trend, but by common object of research. It aims to reduce the harm caused by crime and is therefore closely linked to criminal politics. Jurisprudence's strength has been considered to be research that provides recommendations that guides criminal politics action proposals based on criminological research data.

Further information
The course is compulsory from 1 August 2021 for all those who complete the notary of law degree. The content of the course corresponds to the previous course 5311419 Sociology of Law and Criminology. Students who have completed the course Sociology of Law and Criminology cannot complete this course. The language of instruction is FINNISH.
Execution methods
The course uses the DigiCampus course platform, which does not have a course key.
Accomplishment methods
The course has two alternative modes of completion: Option 1: A learning diary (15 pages, 123 h) based on a series of lectures (12 h) during the autumn semester. Option 2: Self-study of literature and answering written assignments (135 h). Assignments will be published three weeks prior to the return date. Assignments will be returned on DigiCampus.
