Objective
The student has an overall knowledge on processing and analysing techniques related to biorefining. The student is capable of applying the knowledge in planning and implementing research and development project. The course develops the following generic skills: critical thinking, identification and development of one's own expertise, and interaction and communication.
Content
Separation and refining techniques (especially thermal and extraction techniques, filtration, HPCCC, distillation, crystallisation, etc.); application-oriented chemical and microbiological analyses; applications and their development (for example fine chemicals, health products and pharmaceutical products, nutrients, food products; aromas and fragrances, functional products and (bio)material techniques).

To be informed in the beginning of the course. Some of the material is in English.
Further information
Evaluation: Self-evaluation of small groups and verbal assessment by the teacher. The evaluation will acknowledge the written self-assessment and answers to learning tasks. Grading: Fail/Pass. Division of labour and teachers: UEF / Department of Applied Physics is the responsible organizer. In addition, SIB Labs, Institute of Public Health and Clinical Nutrition and Department of Pharmacy participate in teaching. The responsible teacher is professor Reijo Lappalainen. Other teachers from different departments include Laura Tomppo, PhD, Adjunct Professor Arto Koistinen, Jenni Korhonen, PhD and professor Seppo Auriola. Other: Teaching language is Finnish. The course is primarily for students in Bioeconomy Specialisation studies.
Accomplishment methods
Internet lectures, web-based learning, independent studying and contact studies, during which student familiarizes with the analytical techniques in practice. The techniques will be presented with an emphasis on the companies’ or students' own R&D&I application. The student will return answers to learning tasks.
