Objective
After completing the study unit, the student - is able to read correctly the common prayers (e.g. initial prayers, Psalm 50(51), the Creed) in Church Slavonic - is familiar with Cyrillic alphabet, specifics of pronunciation, common abbreviations, diacritics, and numbers - recognises basic vocabulary and grammatical structures in the prayers practised during lessons - is familiar with the history of Church Slavonic and its status among the Slavic languages - has experience in communicating in a digital environment
Content
The student becomes familiar with the Cyrillic alphabet, pronunciation, and basic grammar (phonetics, morphology, syntax) with the help of study materials, in which the texts are both in Church Slavonic and Finnish. Pronunciation and reading of prayers are practised at language studio lessons. The students who have no prior knowledge of Russian language get acquainted with Cyrillic alphabet, basics of pronunciation and general features of Russian before the actual lessons of Church Slavonic.
Qualifications
Russian language at school (A or B level), Russian basic course on university level, or other proven skills in Russian language may be counted as 1 cp (preparatory part). In this case, the student needs to attend only the remaining parts of the course (3 cp).

Accomplishment methods
Modes of study: - Preparatory lectures on the basics of Russian language 12h, independent work 15 h, a written test, OR - Earlier acquired knowledge of Russian language (see Prerequisites), AND - Lecture and exercise course of Church Slavonic, lectures 34 h, independent work 47 h, pronunciation test and final exam, OR - Independent work 108 h, exam. Evaluation criteria: - Basics of Russian language, written test: fail–pass, - Participation in lecture and exercise course: fail–pass, - Pronunciation test and final exam: 0–5
