Objective

Learning outcomes: After completing the course, the student - knows and is able to define key concepts, phenomena and underlying factors related to multilingualism and multilingual communication - has been acquainted with various professional and non-professional contexts of multilingual communication and their key features -is able to analyze an everyday phenomenon related to multilingual communication. The course develops the following work life skills: cultural understanding, media literacy, data sources and source evaluation, time management and pioritization, self-management, collaborative skills, project thinking.

Content

Understanding multilingual communication as a phenomenon and recognizing it in everyday life. The requirements of multilingualism both in different professional and non-professional contexts. The main theories and research methods related to the study of multilingualism.

Teachers: Responsible teacher: professor of translation studies. Several teachers. Time: Spring term of the 1st year. Campus: Joensuu Teaching language: Finnish Generic competences: digitalization, leadership and development, internationality, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication

Execution methods

Lectures given by various teacher and experts. Project work is done in small groups.

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study; Lectures (16 h), literature and exam; documenting a phenomenon of everyday multilingualism in a project work. It is also possible to take the course as a self-study module in the second period. More information about this alternative can be acquired from the teacher.
