Objective

Learning outcomes: Having completed the study unit, the student should be able to - recognize and define central concepts and theoretical basics in cognitive translation studies - classify, describe and analyze translation-related phenomena from cognitive perspective and explain the rationale behind these activities - explain and interpret some of the central research results in cognitive translation studies and give examples of them - realize a small-scale research project on some translation-related phenomenon from the cognitive perspective and report the results of this project The course develops the following work life skills: Language skills, meaning-making, argumentation skills, managing large entities, systematic thinking, time management and prioritization, self-management Generic competences: digitalization, ethics, leadership and development, internationality, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication

Content

In seminars, the students will study the basic principles of cognitive translation studies, discuss the theoretical basics and research orientations of cognitive translation studies, and do exercises in which the basic concepts and principles of cognitive linguistics will be applied in practical analysis. Preparation for seminar sessions involves studying the delivered material in advance outside seminar classes. During the course, the students will give small presentations and conduct an individual, small-scale research project under teacher’s supervision. The topic of the research project will be agreed upon separately, and the students will report the results of their project in a research report that contains at least 1500 words. This research project can be conducted in a group, in which case the length of the final report will be at least 1000 words for each student participating in the group.

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: Seminar course containing 20 hours of contact teaching and 115 hours of independent work, which also includes individual consultation. Seminar work requires active participation (80% attendance requirement). Evaluation criteria: The evaluation is based on the research project (80%) and active participation in the classes (20%).
