Objective
Learning outcomes: Having completed the study unit, the student is able to - recognise and define central concepts and theoretical basis in corpus linguistics - to explain and interpret central research results gathered from corpora and give examples of them - to classify and describe data according to the principles of lexical priming - use the basic notions of modern Firthian linguistics and explain text-based material on the basis of collocation (Firth, Halliday, Sinclair), colligation (Hoey, Sinclair) and semantic association (Louw, Hoey, Sinclair). - classify and analyse linguistic data with the help of concepts used in corpus linguistics - interpret the data and make conclusions about it in the framework of corpus linguistics and, specifically, lexical priming. - this will provide a platform to understand the neurological basis of the semantic web and thus offer potential gateways for applied linguistics, computational linguistics and translation tool applications. The course develops the following work life skills: - Language skills, cultural awareness, reading skills, observation skills, meaning making, argumentation skills, critical thinking, communicative marker detection skills, time management and prioritization skills. Generic competences: digitalization, ethics, internationality, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication
Content
In lectures, seminars and during computer-based hands-on sessions, the basic principles of corpus linguistics will be studied; the theoretical basics and research orientations of lexical priming will be discussed on the basis of study material delivered and studied beforehand, and the students will do exercises in which the basic concepts and principles of corpus linguistics will be applied and lexical priming will be used as the vehicle to interpret the data.
