Objective

Learning outcomes: When completing the course at 3 cp, successful students will - be able to analyze and apply research related to language in terms of acquisition, structure, variation and culture from a pedagogical perspective - be able to describe the components of language awareness in light of linguistics and cultural studies - recognize the significance of interlingual and multilingual perspectives for the teaching and acquisition of language competence - When completing the course at 5 cp, successful students will, in addition, - be acquainted with special issues in the teaching and acquisition of their own language subject - be able to analyze the significance of these issues in language teaching in Finland and in their own (future) work as language teachers This course develops the following work life skills: - Inter- and multidisciplinarity, intercultural skills, creativity, planning conceptualization, systematic thinking, social intelligence, holistic management capability, visualization and demonstration skills, versatility and self-development capability Generic competences: digitalization, ethics, leadership and development, internationality, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication

Content

The course is taught jointly to students of all language subjects and it is closely connected to the research profile of cultural and linguistic encounters at the University of Eastern Finland. The course examines the concept of language awareness from the perspectives of research and language teaching through the central themes of language variation, multilingualism and linguistic encounters, language structures, comparison, and metalanguage, and the connections of language to literature and culture. During the course, students prepare research-based methods and materials for language teaching to be utilized in their work in the classroom. Students who complete the course at 5 cp will in addition familiarize themselves with relevant literature relating to their own language subject (to be agreed upon with the responsible teacher of that subject) and write an essay of at least 2000 words on the subject, discussing it in the context of Finnish language education. The course is taught primarily in Finnish.

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: Lectures and exercises (26 h). Independent study (55 h). 80% attendance is required. Evaluation criteria: For students who complete the course at 3 cp, the grade is based on the exercises (50%) and a final essay (50%). For students who complete the course at 5 cp, the grade is based on the combined total of the course work (60%) and the essay (40%).
