Objective

Having successfully completed the course the student
1) knows the basic grammar structures of Italian language
2) knows the most important rules of pronunciation in Italian
3) can understand and produce simple statements to tell about themselves and about concrete needs
4) can communicate and interact in simple everyday life situations
5) achieves CEFR level A1.1.

Content

In the course, you will learn to interact in Italian in basic communicative situations, such as introducing yourself, talking about your studies and work, ordering food and drinks and shopping for some basic items.
The course is built around three main units:
1) Piacere di conoscerti! > introducing yourself: name, age, nationality, residence, language skills, work/studies.
2) Il conto, per favore. > ordering food and drinks in a cafeteria and in a restaurant, paying the bill.
3) Acquisti in città > shopping for basic everyday items in different stores, e.g. pharmacy, tobacconist’s, grocery store.

During the lessons, we will concentrate on listening comprehension, pronunciation and speaking exercises, and we will use pair and group exercises and small games in order to activate your communication skills. At home, you will be required to do some preparatory work for the lessons, as well as some homework and online activities.

Qualifications

None required: the course is for absolute beginners. If you have already studied Italian before or you have lived in Italy, please contact the teacher before the beginning of the course.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Contact teaching path
1) active participation in class (attendance min. 80%)
2) completion of homework tasks and online activities (Moodle)
3) final exam

Online teaching path
1) successful completion of exercises and activities in the Moodle workspace (pass level: 60%)
2) final exam (pass level: 60%)
3) learning diary, min. 1 entry / week for the duration of the course.

Execution methods

There are two possible learning paths for this course, and you should choose the one that best fits you:
1. Contact teaching path: choose this option if you can participate in the course meetings according to the schedule. Contact teaching includes active participation in the meetings, independent work and study at home as well as preparing for the meetings with preliminary tasks.
2. Online teaching path: choose this option if you prefer independent self-paced study or if the course meetings do not fit your schedule. Online learning includes independent work online with the help of a tutor, as well as possible online meetings.

Accomplishment methods

Contact teaching path: Regular attendance and active participation (36 h). Student’s individual or small group work (60 h), including homework assignments, preparatory work for the meetings, online exercises and activities. Final exam (written and oral). It is allowed to miss a maximum of 2 classes, and it is necessary to do extra work to make up for any missed class.

Online teaching path: Independent self-paced study on the Moodle platform (ca. 100 h) including conversation tasks, intermediate tests (written and oral), final task (written and oral). Additional online meetings if necessary.
