Objective
The student understands the strengths and weaknesses of methods that can be used in different types of futures analyses of forest bioeconomy. The student knows how to set criteria for the selection of futures analysis methods on a case-by-case basis. The student can analyse the evolvement of the operating environment and business opportunities of forest bioeconomy in alternative futures. Based on his/her own analysis, the student can formulate reasoned statements on the possible and plausible future development paths of forest bioeconomy and the nature of the changes therein. The student can critically evaluate the implemented future analyses linked to forest bioeconomy. The course develops the following generic skills: digitalization, ethics, leadership and development, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication.
Content
Foresight frames: different motives, needs, and use cases of futures analyses connected to forests and their use. Criteria for selecting the methods to be used for futures analysis and for ex-post evaluation of the futures analysis and foresight reports. Advanced applications of the futures table, futures wheel and the Delphi method. Meaningful implementation of the scenario approach and the backcasting method in forest bioeconomy.
Qualifications
Until 31.7.2023: No formal prerequisites, but successful completion of the course requires basic knowledge of forest bioeconomy and research methods. From 1.8.2023: Participants must be MSc or DSc students (i.e., BSc students may not enroll the course but are advised to take instead the course Principles of futures thinking and foresight methods for forestry students). Successful completion of the course requires basic knowledge of forest bioeconomy and research methods.
Materials
Material provided in lectures and exercises.
Further information
The course is taught every year (autumn). Lectures in English, exercises and exam in English or in Finnish. The course is primarily aimed at UEF’s master's degree students, but it is also suitable for exchange students on master's level as well as doctoral students.
Execution methods
Lectures and exercises partly as distance learning (Zoom) and partly in a hybrid mode (simultaneous contact and distance learning); instructions and material, as well as the submission of exercise reports and students’ own futures analyses and online exam in Moodle. It is possible to complete the course completely remotely.
Accomplishment methods
Lectures (12 h), exercises (16 h) and their reporting (25%), student’s own forest bioeconomy futures analysis and an oral presentation based on it (25%), an open 24-hour online exam (50%).
