Objective

After completing the course, the student will be able to • work independently and safely in laboratory • knows the basics of sampling and sample preparation • knows the basics of liquid equilibrium • can calculate simple pH calculations • can perform gravimetric analysis • can perform different types of titrations • can observe errors in analytical methods • can enroll to independent laboratory exercise and knows the operating modes

Content

Safety in laboratory, sampling and sample preparation, equilibria in solution, simple pH-calculations, gravimetry, titrimetric methods, qualitative observation of analytical errors. Guidance to independent laboratory exercises.

Qualifications

Introductory Laboratory Course in Chemistry or Introductory Laboratory Course in Chemistry A - C or Introductory Laboratory Course in Chemistry Chemical and laboratory safety, Introductory Laboratory Course in Chemistry - virtual exercises and Introductory Laboratory Course in Chemistry – laboratory exercises

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Grading of 0-5 based on examination, mandatory laboratory exercise must be participated. Extra points are not given in later exams.

Materials

Lecture material based on the book: Harris, D. C. Quantitative Chemical (7. or later edition).

Execution methods

Lectures, exercises and laboratory exercises as contact teaching. Exam in lecture room.

Accomplishment methods

Participation in lectures (18 h), exercises (4 h) and mandatory laboratory exercises (4h) given as contact teaching. Participation in voluntary exercises gives extra points (max 10%) when the course is passed by the exam after the course. The course is passed by the exam (2h) and the laboratory exercise.
