Objective
The successful student will - demonstrate an understanding of a selection of modern, experimental British and American poetry - reflect critically on some of the controversies that have informed the writing and reception of experimental poetry works - demonstrate a critical understanding of selected works from individual experimental poets and understand some of the historical and cultural contexts in which these poets were working. The course develops the following work life skills: - Language skills, knowledge of socio-cultural contexts related to specific countries, basic research skills, meaning-making, time management and prioritisation Generic competences: ethics, internationality, critical thinking
Content
The course focuses on the development of experimental poetry in Britain and the USA from the 20th century to the present. We will consider some of the most significant poetic movements through a focus on selected key texts and connect such literary developments to their literary and cultural contexts, including but not limited to their relations to other art forms. We will see how experimental poets have responded to the cultural conditions and challenges of their time through finding new modes of literary expression. The course will develop students’ close reading skills and attention to the nuances of literary expression.
