The student can conceptually analyse her/his search topic, prepare search queries, perform searches, and evaluate the search results. The student uses information resources ethically and legally. The student acknowledges the user rights and avoids plagiarism. The student is accounted for similarities and differences of scientific and vocational information retrieval and sources.

Content

- The basics of scientific publishing and copyright - Evaluation criteria of information sources - Analysis of search topic, formulation of search queries and search strategy - Basic use of subject-specific databases.

Further information

The course is conducted in conjunction with the Bachelor's Seminar. The course instruction will be in the student email after the enrollment period has expired. The course starts with independent study. The course develops the following generic competences: academic learning skills, information retrieval skills, evaluation of information sources, critical literacy and evaluation, problem-solving skills and development of expertise.

Execution methods

Teaching is carried out using the reverse classroom, or flipped classroom method, in which students are initially acquainted with the theory part of the course independently. Advance material included in the course includes instructional videos and related advance assignments. Students will watch the videos and complete the tasks well before entering the database exercise. Database exercises do not return to the theory of information retrieval, but practice information retrieval in practice, using their own research topic. The final work in writing is a search for information on one's own Barchelor's Seminar topic. If you are unable to participate in any of the training groups, participation can be replaced by a written assignment.

Accomplishment methods

Independently completed video learning material with prior assignments at the beginning of the course (approx. 6-10 hours), database exercises in teaching class 2h (can be replaced by written assignment) and written final assignment (approx. 10 hours). Assessment criteria: Qualified performance: all prior tasks completed (50% or more of points), participation in exercises or substitution and final task done according to instructions and meet the criteria given. Evaluation: pass - fail. As from 1 August 2023, the library courses cannot be partly accredited through RPL.
