Osaamistavoitteet

The student will - Know the basic principles of English criminal law and the peculiarities of the common law system. - Recognise how and to what extent general principles and policies of criminal law differ between the common law system and the civil law system. - Know how to approach and analyse English criminal law cases. - Identify how the common law tradition and English criminal law have influenced international criminal law. This course unit develops the following generic traits: - digitalization - ethics - leadership and development - internationality - sustainability and responsibility - critical thinking - identification and development of expertise - interaction and communication

Sisältö

The course focuses on the general principles and policies of criminal law, the range of criminal law, and the contours of criminal liability. On a more specific level, the course familiarizes the student with the general and substantive English criminal law and the common law tradition.

Teachers: Seminar (Mode of Study 1): Giulio Calcara Exam in Digicampus platform (Mode of Study 2): Jussi Karkkulainen Time: Mode of Study 1: The seminar sessions will be organised in the Fall semester. The essay for the seminar can be submitted until the end of May. Mode of Study 2: The exam may be taken four times during the academic year (twice in the Autumn semester and twice in the Spring semester). This course is open to everyone. E-platform: The course has two different Digicampus platforms: one for the Mode of Study 1 and one for the Mode of Study 2. In case you register to the Mode of Study 1, the link to the platform and key will be sent by email to the participants just before the start of the seminar. Suoritustavat

The course has two alternative modes of study. Mode of Study 1: The course is organized as seminar, consisting of 10 hours of mandatory lectures. The seminar consists of traditional lecturing combined with sessions dedicated to case studies. During these sessions, students will read relevant cases and practice analysing the main legal issues. At the end of the seminar, students will write a 10 page (3000 words) essay on the case studies discussed in the classroom and on a research topic agreed with the lecturer. Mode of Study 2: Students can take the written exam. With this alternative, the lectures are voluntary. In the academic year 2021-2022, written examination can only be taken in Finnish. From autumn semester 2022 onwards, the written examination can be taken in Finnish or in English through the Digicampus platform. Please send all questions concerning the practical aspects of Mode of Study 1 (i.e., the seminars, lectures, or essays) to Giulio Calcara and of Mode of Study 2 (i.e., the exams) to Jussi Karkkulainen. Evaluation criteria: Mode of Study 1: Continuous assessment of active participation in the seminar exercises and the grade of the final essay will determine the final grade. Mode of Study2: Exam 0–5.
