Objective

Learning outcomes: The course is an advanced course in cancer biology. After the course, the student - has gained deepened knowledge on cellular, molecular and genetic basis of cancer - understands differences between cancer types in relation to cancer biology and research - understands the concepts and inter-dependencies between cancer-related basic, preclinical, clinical and drug research and the society - can explain the principles of cancer modelling at molecular, cellular, tissue and organism level - is able to compare methods used in cancer research and modelling - is able to apply the knowledge obtained during the course to biological research of cancer

Content

Cellular, molecular and genetic basis of cancer. Key concepts of cancer-related basic, preclinical, clinical and drug research. Methods in laborative cancer research and modelling at molecular, cellular, and organismal level. Cell models, xenografts, genetic mouse models, other animal models. Specific traits of different cancers influencing research and modelling. The use of cancer models in basic research, drug development and development of treatment procedures. Considerations and ethics in the use of patient samples and cancer models. Motives, aims and challenges in development of new models. Future directions, virtual and AI-based modelling.

Further information

Offering data: Biomed 4-5, MDP in Biomed 1-2 Campus: Kuopio Further information: Teaching and accomplishing language is English. The course complies with the Rector's decision (47/2023) "Guidelines for the use of AI in teaching and research at the University of Eastern Finland". It is allowed to use artificial intelligence applications (- Here artificial intelligence refers especially to Large Language Model -based generative artificial intelligence) to support learning. If such applications have been used to support collection of information and preparation of an essay or to answer learning tasks, it must be clearly stated in the reference list of the essay, or in connection to the written answers. More detailed instructions on the usage of artificial intelligence and reporting can be found in the course page on the eLearn platform.
