Objective

The aim of this course is to give an introduction to the basics of radiochemistry and physics as well as to medical applications of radiation such as use of radiopharmaceuticals in therapy, imaging and diagnostics.

Content

The basics of the radiochemistry and physics. The sources, concept, type and measurement of the radiation. production of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals, applications of radioisotopes in medicine, such as the use of radiopharmaceuticals in therapy, imaging and diagnostics. The use of radiopharmaceuticals in therapy, imaging and diagnostics. Handling of radioactive material in a laboratory.

Execution methods

Week meetings and decay problem solving 10 hours. Independent studying (40 h). Laboratory practice (obligatory) using radioactive Technetium 99m (below safety limit, 10 MBq). Flipped classroom teaching method is used, in which the student becomes acquainted with the material in Moodle and performs preliminary assignments based on it.

Accomplishment methods

Preliminary assignments, compulsory laboratory exercise (4 h max 8 students / group), exercise reporting and final exam. Extra points (+ 10% maximum) are given of preliminary assignments for the final exam. Evaluation criteria: Accepted laboratory work and final exam. Extra points (+ 10% maximum) are given of preliminary assignments for the final exam.
