Objective

The student knows the central routes of drug metabolism and transport, the proteins involved in these routes and factors regulating their activities. The student can design and perform a metabolic incubation and calculate and interpret its results. The student knows the main mechanisms of inhibition and induction and how they affect drug pharmacokinetics. Generic skills: leadership and development, internationality, critical thinking, recognizing and developing own expertise, interaction and communication

Content

The properties of drug-metabolizing enzymes and their reaction types, drug transporters, reaction kinetics, inhibition and induction, key factors influencing enzyme/transporter activity, central methodology, how results are used in prediction of drug pharmacokinetics.

Qualifications

Basic understanding of biochemistry and pharmacokinetics (SOBIF, LAF or similar courses) is essential for the DMPK course. Exchange and non-Pharmacy students should inquire before registration and provide a study transcript and description of relevant prior courses.

Materials

Materials provided for contact teaching (lectures, exercises). Selected relevant chapters from Zhang et al. Drug metabolism in drug design and development or Casarett & Doull’s Toxicology or Goodman & Gilman’s The pharmacological basis of therapeutics

Priority is given to degree students for whom the course is mandatory. Others are selected based on their prior studies (Exchange, non-Pharmacy, doctoral students). Provide your study transcript when inquiring your eligibility from the course leader.

Execution methods

Classroom teaching, lab teaching, studying online. Lectures in English, exercises in English and Finnish.

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: Degree students: lectures 25 h, calculation exercises 15 h, lab exercise + seminar 10 h, calculation and theory exams 8 h, Moodle tasks 2 h, Journal Club 4 h, independent study 44 h. Evaluation criteria: Calculation and theory exams (50% + 50%), mandatory lab exercise + seminar, Moodle tasks awards bonus points (max. +10%). Evaluation on a scale 0–5.
