Objective

Upon the completion of the course, the student is able - to examine musical multiculturalism in the context of Eastern Christianity - to compare between different Eastern Christian music traditions in their liturgical-historical contexts - to critically evaluate different kinds of sources - to create a blog page and compile blog posts with audiovisual contents

Content

Liturgical chant traditions of different Orthodox and Oriental Churches (Coptic, Ethiopian, Middle Eastern, Armenian, Georgian, Russian Old Rite, Carpatho-Ruthenian), their history and contemporary practices. Creating a blog page and communicating in blog environment.

Time: Lecture and exercise course in II period every second or third year. Online course available for the whole academic year, including summer. Offering data: Degree students of the University of Eastern Finland and international exchange students. Others than degree students of church music sign up to Music Cultures of the Eastern Churches. Language of tuition: English Generic skills: Internationalism, Critical thinking, Digitalisation

Execution methods

2–8 hours of lectures may be substituted with thematically appropriate visiting lectures, based on pre-agreement with the teacher. Lectures are organised jointly with Music Cultures of the Eastern Churches (4 ECTS).

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: 1) Lecture and exercise course. Attending lectures and completing learning assignments on basis of given instructions and schedule. Lectures 16 h, independent work 119 h. OR 2) Online course in the eLearn e-learning environment. Independent work 135 h. Evaluation criteria: Learning assignments: 0–5
