Objective

Upon the completion of the course, the student - has gained experience in chanting and reciting the basic liturgical repertoire of the Orthodox Church - is familiar with the chant and text books for the Divine Liturgy and the Vigil - is able to sing all four parts (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) in the chant repertoire of the course - is able to apply the troparion and sticheron chants of the Octoechos to liturgical text - has gained experience in identification and development of expertise as well as interaction and communication. Content

During the course, the student becomes familiar with the standard chant repertoire of the Divine Liturgy and the Vigil which is used in the Finnish Orthodox Church (sticheron, troparion, canon tunes of the Octoechos). The student becomes acquainted with the main liturgical chant and textual material and the responsibilities of a cantor and a reader. The course includes memorizing the troparion and sticheron melody formulas and applying them to liturgical texts.

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: - Lectures and exercises (62 h), assignments and independent work (73), of which 30 h are completed as group practice in a liturgical context. Group practice takes place in the liturgical services of the Orthodox Seminary. The student participates as a singer in the choir. OR - Independent work (133 h) and exam (2 h, two oral exams separately) Evaluation criteria: Active participation (80%) and assignments. Oral exams (included in the exercises), 0–5: 1) The notated chants of the Divine Liturgy (all voice parts) and the troparion melodies of the Octoechos (soprano parts), applied to chant texts 2) The notated chants of the Vigil (all voice parts) and the sticheron melodies of the Octoechos (soprano parts), applied to chant texts
