Objective
Upon the completion of the course, the student is able to - explain different phases in the development of Byzantine Rite worship - describe Orthodox hymn types, their historical development and liturgical use - evaluate and apply critically different sources and compile a glossary of church music - analyse hymnography on a basic level

Time: Lecture and exercise course in 2nd period in odd years. Online course available for the whole academic year, including summer. Offering data: All degree students of theology at the University of Eastern Finland. Others than students of church music assign to the course using code Intermediate Studies: Hymnology of the Eastern Church. Language of tuition: Finnish. Study materials distributed during the course include materials in English. Generic skills: Critical thinking.
Accomplishment methods
The course is divided into two parts: 1) Lecture and exercise course (hymnology). Attending lectures and completing learning assignments on basis of given instructions and schedule. Lectures 20 h, independent work 34 h. OR 2) Online course (hymnology), independent work 54 h. AND 3) Learning assignment (hymnography; essay), independent work 54 h. Evaluation criteria: The assignments are evaluated on the scale 0–5 (assigments in hymnology 50% and assignment in hymnography 50%).
