Basics of Biblical Greek 1Laajuus (5 cr)

Objective

Upon completing the course, a successful student - Is able to read and write Greek - Is able to recognize and define basic linguistic structures of biblical Greek and recall its central vocabulary - Is able to use dictionary and grammar to translate simple Greek texts from the Bible - Understands the significance of mastering the language and how it can be utilised - Knows the culture behind the language on the basis of the texts they translate - Is capable of responsible and systematic independent study and working to benefit their own as well as their groups learning - Is able to utilise the above-mentioned skills in working life and to understand the significance of those skills in their own work Generic Competences: Internationality, Identification and development of expertise

During the course the student is familiarized with - the writing system, grammar, and independent translation of biblical Greek using dictionary and grammar, as well as problems of translation and interpretation - the culture behind the language on the basis of the texts they translate

Execution methods

- Lectures to teach reading and writing Greek. The student must give a reading sample to the teacher before the contact teaching phase begins. - Independent or group study of the language in a virtual blended learning environment (eLearn) and completing exercises before and after lectures: instructions for materials and studying, video tutorials and the tasks related to them, texts related to video content, exercises, other learning material and communication applications (also in Viva Engage) for informing, asking questions and discussion. Pre-lecture assignments must be handed in by a prescribed time a day before contact teaching. Contact teaching cannot be attended unless the assignments have been handed in. - Contact teaching in which the difficult topics are addressed, and the knowledge acquired independently is deepened and put in practice with Greek New and Old Testament texts - Final exam. The course must be completed within one academic year, partial performance will not be recorded. The exam can only be taken as a course exam. - Dictionary is allowed in the exam. - The student must report to the teacher a weekly, realistic and detailed written plan of their time management and methods to study the language (schedule, learning methods, etc.) at least a week before the contact teaching begins, and track the implementation of the plan throughout the course. Time management plan and a report on its implementation will be written in the student’s personal space in the virtual learning environment. - In the independent study mode, the student studies the eLearn material of the language course independently (see the previous description of the implementation of the lecture course), completes the pre- and post-tasks of the contact teaching (weekly exams) according to the schedule of the lecture course (pay attention to the schedule) and participates in the final exam of the course's lecture course or its re-examination.

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: Mode 1: Lectures and examination 30 h, independent/group study, discussion/interaction with other students and the teacher, independent work 105 h. OR Mode 2: Independent study and exam 135 h. Evaluation criteria: - Time management plan and its implementation and working in a group (20 % of the grade) - Weekly assignments (40 % of the grade) - Final exam (40 % of the grade) - Evaluation criteria is how well the student is able to recognize and explain structures and phenomena of biblical Greek in a text, and how well they are able to translate text and explain its linguistic phenomena.
