Objective

Learning objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will - The student will be able to understand the main features of the historical development of the Swedish language - can outline the main literary sources of each period - is familiar with the main aspects of the phonetic and formal structure of Ancient Swedish and is able to describe the historical development since then - knowledge of the historical development of vocabulary and the use of the main etymological dictionaries - understand the factors influencing language change - understands the impact of historical development on modern language and can explain, for example, morphological variation in modern language. The course will develop, inter alia, the following work skills: - Language skills, information acquisition and management, large-scale management

Content

The course covers the main features of the development of the Swedish language. The course examines the phonetic and morphological structure of ancient Swedish and the subsequent changes in the language and their impact on modern speech, practises understanding ancient texts, and introduces the historical development of vocabulary and the use of etymological dictionaries.

The course can be taken on a continuous learner's permit if the student has obtained a Swedish language minor during the course of the degree.
