Content
Many historians of language/literature would probably agree that in many ancient languages, metrical written forms preceded non-metrical written forms. This course focuses on poetry in English, and looks at both the forms of a poetic text and the historical development of this art form in the English language. It introduces the central modes of expression and trends (e.g. Romanticism, Modernism, and Contemporary Poetry) of English poetic writing. It will also introduce the central concepts of poetic style, expression, poetic devices and imagery. While there will be a clear focus on English and Scottish poets, other English-language poetry will also be discussed.
