Objective

Learning outcomes: On completion of the study unit the successful student will be able to: - Identify some recent approaches that are concerned with the intersection of English studies and computing - Understand the importance of new digital tools in English studies - Make use of digital corpus tools and methods in studies and in working life - Benefit from English corpus linguistics for digital humanities projects - Plan and implement a small-scale research project that focuses on digital tools in English studies. This project can focus on digital tools in teaching and/or in research (i.e. possible topics include, but are not limited to, data collection and analysis, visualization and interpreting data, making use of digital tools in teaching, etc.). The course develops the following work life skills: Self-management, meaning making, argumentation skills, managing large entities, systematic thinking, time management and prioritization skills, digital competences Generic competences: digitalization, ethics, leadership and development, internationality, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise

Content

This course focuses on the use of digital tools in English studies. A specific emphasis is placed on integrating basic computing skills to English linguistics so that these skills could be used in basic and applied research. Note that this is not a programming course and no prior programming competence is needed. The course introduces some recent advances in digital humanities in English studies and re-caps the intermediate and advanced tools in English corpus linguistics. Each student is expected to develop a small-scale digital humanities project from which they could benefit in their studies and/or professional careers.
