Objective

Learning outcomes: A successful student is able to - Recognize the central schools in literary and cultural theory and their special features - Analyse and compare different theories and their applicability The course develops the following work life skills: - meaning making, coping with workload, social intelligence, management of large entities, information sources and source critique, language skills, presentation skills, time management and prioritization, self-management, special knowledge of a country/cultural area

Content

The focus of the course is on contemporary theories and methods in literary and cultural studies and their applicability. The course seeks to develop methodological skills and assist in research. The course can be taken as a book examination consisting of Barry’s book and another book supporting the student’s pro gradu thesis to be chosen in consultation with the teacher in charge.

Qualifications

Participants are expected to have taken the compulsory literature courses in basic and intermediate studies.

Materials

Course book: Peter Barry, Beginning Theory: An Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory, 2nd ed. (Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2004) and excerpts from Julie Rivkin and Michael Ryan (eds.) Literary Theory: An Anthology, 2nd ed. (Oxford: Blackwell, 2007). If taken as a book examination, students read Barry’s book and another book dealing with the student’s research topic.

Time: 3rd-4th year of study Campus: Joensuu Further information: The course is intended for students of English who specialize on the study of literature and culture and are enrolled in Bachelor’s or Master’s seminar courses or write a thesis on the subject. Language of tuition: English. Generic competences: ethics, internationality, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: Lectures (12 h), seminars (10h) and independent study. Active participation (80%) in seminars is required. Alternatively a book examination. Evaluation criteria: Written work (academic diary; 70%) and continuous assessment (presentation 30%) or book examination.
