Objective

Learning outcomes: On completion of the study unit the successful student will be able to: - recognize, describe and analyze the use and meaning of English structures at phrase level and beyond in their real linguistic usage context - explain how the English verb system functions especially with respect to tense, aspect and modality - recognize and distinguish between different linguistic registers and their grammatical variation - apply grammatical concepts in the description and analysis of English - recognize differences between spoken and written language - produce a description of a grammatical phenomenon based on source material and collected real-life examples The course develops the following work life skills: Language skills, meaning making, argumentation skills, managing large entities, systematic thinking, time management and prioritization, adaptability Generic competences: internationality, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication

Content

The course is based on a corpus-based grammar of present-day English and includes issues such as complex verb and noun phrases, adverbials, the various types of independent and dependent clauses, word order choices, and the grammar of conversation. The lectures include practical grammar exercises and other tasks.

This requires the student study the study materials described above and the additional material that is found in the Moodle environment prepared for this purpose. Independent study of the course consists of taking an electronic exam in the Exam system and submitting the required exercises to the Moodle environment. To access the Moodle environment, the student needs to contact the responsible teacher.

Modes of study: Lectures and exercises (26 h), independent work (55 h). Evaluation criteria: Course exam, in addition to which the other assignments required in the course (which may include a learning diary, presentation, a short essay or specific exercises) need to be completed and accepted.
