Objective
Learning outcomes: A successful student will be able to • plan and prepare an academic paper dealing with Anglophone literature or culture (BA thesis) • recognise the basic issues and conventions in the chosen field of study and follow them • locate and evaluate research relevant to the chosen field of research • to critically analyse their own and other students’ work The course develops the following work life skills: language skills, culture specialisation, meaning-making, systematic thinking, social intelligence, argumentation skills, giving feedback, time management and prioritisation, managing large entities, research skills and critical thinking, presentation skills, IT skills (Office) Generic competences: digitalization, ethics, leadership and development, internationality, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication
Content
This course deals with the basics of carrying out research in literary and cultural studies. It pays special attention to academic writing in English and its conventions such as the MLA style. Students learn to locate and use source materials, and define and limit a research problem. During the course they will plan and write an academic paper on Anglophone literature or culture. They will also practice oral communication skills in an academic context. The language of the course is English.

The course is not open to exchange students. In connection with the Bachelor’s Seminar course, students majoring in English are expected to take the discipline-specific course on information retrieval skills 8020080 Information Skills in English Language and Literature Studies (1 cp) offered by the library. It is recommended that the course be taken in tandem with the Bachelor’s Seminar. NB! IT IS ALSO STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT THE STUDENTS TAKE THE ADVANCED STUDIES COURSE 2130502 Methodology: Literary and Cultural Theory IN TANDEM WITH THE BACHELOR’S SEMINAR.
