Objective

Learning outcomes: At the end of the course the students will • be aware of the social and cultural contexts of literary texts • be aware how Anglophone literary texts construct realities and meanings • recognize the basic concepts and terminology concerned with the close reading and critical analysis of fiction • be able to apply these concepts in the communicative context of the classroom as well as in a written discussion of a fictive text The course develops the following work life skills: Language skills, multidisciplinarity, knowledge of socio-cultural contexts related to specific countries, presentation skills, argumentation skills, basic research skills, meaning-making, social intelligence, time management and prioritisation Generic competences: ethics, internationality, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication

Content

In the tutorials the students are introduced with the basic concepts and terminology concerned with the close reading and critical analysis of fictive texts, and practice the application of these concepts. The chosen texts familiarise the students with fiction in English and its genres, narrative conventions, and the importance of social, historical and cultural context in literary analysis. The students will be required to participate regularly and actively in one of the tutorial groups.

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: Tutorials (11 hours); independent study (95 hours). 80 % attendance in the tutorials required. Evaluation criteria: Continuous assessment, an essay (600 words), a final essay (1 200 words) Evaluation: 0-5.
