Research EthicsLaajuus (1 cr)

Objective

After completing the course, the doctoral researcher is able to 1. recognise and analyse key research ethical questions, 2. formulate ethical research plans and responses to ethical challenges by applying key ethical theories and approaches, 3. recognise and understand key ethical principles guiding research and how they apply to research work, 4. understand the Finnish Responsible Conduct of Research guidelines, processes for dealing with research misconduct, and processes for applying research license or ethical review, 5. identify rights and responsibilities as a researcher, 6. understand how ethical decisions and choices influence society and research community, and 7. write a peer review and give constructive feedback.

Content

The course bases on the national web-course on Research Ethics, which contains videolectures, literary material and assessments. The learning materials of course fall under four themes: A. Introduction to Research Ethics: Why is ethics important for research? Thinking through Ethics B. Ethics in research Planning: Conflict of Interest, Values informing data collection, Do I need a research license or an ethical review?, Data management and ethics, Whose data? Ethics and working with others C. Ethics in Conducting Research: Research Misconduct, Ethics in Supervision, Ethics and Research Funding, Plagiarism and misappropriation D. Ethics and sharing research results: Authorship, Journals Assessment tasks of the course: 1. Ethical issues and challenges in my own research 2. Peer Review 3. Discussion board group activity on ethical issues 4. Reflection and solutions to ethical issues 5. Quizzes associated with each topic

Execution methods

The course is taught as a scheduled online course twice a year.

The course completion requires: - active engagement with the course material, - completing compulsory assessment tasks. The course can be completed in English.
