Objective
Learning outcomes After completing the study unit the student will be able to understand the principles of urban lighting and can design lighting solutions to urban environments and outdoor spaces. The student will be able to apply lighting theory to outdoor lighting design solutions and to take into consideration the needs of users and activities within urban environments. The student will be able to understand the phases of a lighting design process and can prepare design documents relating to them. The student will be able to carry out lighting calculations in relation to urban environments and consider suitable illuminance levels for different use situations. The student will have knowledge of luminaire types and intelligent lighting control solutions used in outdoor environments and understand how the properties of light sources and lighting fixtures influence the final lighting solution. The student can visualize the effects of lighting in urban environments utilizing visual presentation and visualization programs. The student will be able to perceive the ecological and economic aspects of urban lighting.
Content
The study unit deals with the basic concepts, principles and theory of the design of urban, outdoor and street lighting. Existing urban lighting solutions will be analysed. Students will devise in groups a lighting plan into an urban context and make computer-aided visualizations of it. During the study unit, user-oriented design methods and scenario working will be introduced, as well as different luminaire and lighting control solutions. The contents of the study unit include working with lighting visualization and calculation programs. The program includes excursions to realized urban lighting projects and environments, and a workshop, where students design and carry out lighting tests and/or create lighting installations. The study unit includes lectures about basic principles of lighting design, urban lighting, façade lighting and lighting visualization and calculation.
