Objective
Course gives basic knowledge related to steels used in Finnish industry. Student learns principles used in steel designations and is capable to apply this knowledge in identifying different steels. Student get acquainted to structural steels, pressure vessel steels, stainless steels and heat-treatable steels and on their carbon footprint and typical applications. Basic destructive testing methods in order to determine mechanical properties are introduced in the course. Basics for corrosion, its effects on steel and testing methods are introduced.
Content
Steel manufacturing and classification (SFS-EN 10020, SFS-EN 10027-1…2), Structural steels (SFS-EN 10025-2…-6), pressure equipment steels (SFS-EN 10028-2…-7, SFS-EN 10216-2…-5), stainless steels (SFS-EN 10088-1), heat-treatable steels (SFS-EN ISO 683-1…4). Sustainability (e.g. corrosion and life cycle). Carbon footprint of steels (SFS-EN 15804). Destructive testing (tensile test, bend test, Charpy-V test, hardness testing, micro examination).
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Student has strong difficulties in recognizing steels based on their designation code and does not outline how designation code is formed. Student has only passable knowledge in identifying steels and their typical applications. Student has difficulties in defining parameters affecting on carbon footprint. Student has only fair knowledge on mechanical, technological and corrosion properties of steels.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Student recognize steels based on their designation code and does outline how designation code is formed. Student fair good knowledge in identifying steels and their typical applications. Student has appropriate skills in defining parameters affecting on carbon footprint. Student has fair good knowledge on mechanical, technological and corrosion properties of steels.
