Speech Communication and Academic Writing 3 ECTS
Competence Goals:
The student becomes familiar with the central theories and concepts of oral communication. S/he learns to perceive and interpret his/her perceptions in different communication situations. The student knows how to receive and give feedback. S/he recognizes him/herself as a communicator: a speaker and a writer. The student is able to express and analyze his/her own thoughts in writing. S/he knows how to assess and work on his/her own text. S/he is able to prepare a written presentation in a matter-of-fact style, correct both in language and in style and is familiar with the special requirements of writing scientific papers and theses.

Getting started with Oral/Speech Communication with an individual reflective assignment about communication in nursing,
Oral presentations/ Speeches to be delivered  and evaluated by peers: providing and receiving feedback,  participation in whole class, group and pair discussions. Listening skills.  
Communication Process (inhibiting/facilitating,assigning roles/ equality/ an equal opportunity/space to express one's opinion, etc).
Self-study material on Moodle
A course assignment given in paper form (available on the Moodle too)
Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication in Nursing, e.g. Body Language - High/Low Power Status
Assignment
ACADEMIC PROFESSIONAL WRITING
Oral presentations to be given and providing peer evaluation, participationin meetings, group discussions to be participated and led.
Academically relevant texts and articles for thestudentto acquire  proficiency and comprehension within health and nursing topics. The student  learns to write documents, such as academic essays, study reports, summaries, and abstracts. The student  develops confidence and proficiency in the academic writing skills, including the use of rhetorical modes, i.e. communication strategies.
