Objective

English and Communication 3 ECTS

Competence Goals:
The aim of the course is for the student to achieve a high level of academic and professional English by focusing on reading, writing and speaking skills. In addition, the student should gain the confidence and ability to communicate using English in work. The student is capable of interactive, client-centred oral and written communication.The degree certificate has the following statement concerning the English language: The student’s oral and written skills in the degree programme’s mandatory foreign language(s) are at a level necessary for practicing an occupation and for professional development (352/2003, 8 §). The degree certificate does not show the English grade.

Content

Professional journals and textbooks about the studies of the Bachelor of Health Care and Nursing English.
Hospital as a working environment, medical/nursing specializations, multidisciplinary team members, especially health care professionals, titles and education, and their main duties.
Admitting and discharging patients. Ward routines. Patient education and instructions about imminent hospital stay, wound care, etc.
Patient cases, nursing interventions, nursing equipment.
Expanding vocabulary: human anatomy, ailments, conditions, special medical terminology (affixes, prefixes, suffixes).
