Objective

The student learns the basics of x-ray diffraction with powdered samples and has an overview of different analytical methods related to qualitative, quantitative and crystallite size analysis. He knows the instrumental set-ups for different measurement geometries and knows the functions of the instrument components. The course develops the following generic skills: critical thinking, identification and development of one's own expertise, and communication.

Content

Properties of x-rays. Geometry of crystals. Diffraction geometry. Diffraction intensity. Diffraction in real samples. Diffractometer measurements. Diffractometer configuration. Quantitative analysis. Line profile analysis. Other methods.

Materials

Lecture materials. Cullity & Stock: Elements of x-ray diffraction, Prentice-Hall, 2001.
