Objective

Learning outcomes: The student will - recognise the basic concepts related to methodology and research methods (e.g. qualitative/quantitative research, validity, reliability) - be familiar with the central methods of data gathering and analysis applied in language and translation studies and recognize their methodological status - be able to analyse and critically review research reports where methods discussed in the course are used - know how to apply the methods discussed in the course when planning a concrete research project - be able to apply the method used in their own research project

Content

The course discusses the key methods of linguistic and translation research through lectures, exercises and reading materials. The course consists of modules, some of which are compulsory and common to all participants (methodology, introduction to the field of research and linguistic analysis) and some of which are optional, such as corpus research, survey and interview studies, discourse analysis, text analysis, ethnographic study, comparative study, experimental research and statistical methods. Research reporting, academic argumentation and research ethics are also discussed. The students will choose the optional modules according to their own interests so that these will cover either 3 ECTS or 5 ECTS. The discussed methods are applied in a project paper, in which the student is supposed to plan how to use an applicable research method in a research project. It would be useful to link the research project to the student’s BA or MA thesis.
