Objective
Learning outcomes: On completion of the study unit the successful student will be able to • use formal lexis and grammar appropriate for academic writing in English • plan and write an academic essay • recognize basic principles of academic integrity (appropriate quoting, paraphrasing) and is aware of ethically sound writing practices • apply the principles of organization to writing and develop an argument using appropriate academic conventions • construct linguistically idiomatic, coherent and well-argued academic essays in English The course develops the following work life skills: Language skills, argumentation skills, information retrieval skills, writing in different genres, time management and prioritization skills, social intelligence

Modes of study: Active participation in class (26h) and independent work (109h), 80% attendance Evaluation criteria: During the course students will write two essays (30% and 50%) and graded short assignments (20%)
Content
Principles of academic integrity, principles of organization, textual cohesion, the structure of academic essays, citing and paraphrasing, finding and using sources.
