Objective
The course provides a basic knowledge of surgical nursing. On completion of the course, the student • Knows the steps of the surgical patient care pathway. • Recognises the impact surgically treated diseases have on the patient’s health, functional ability in everyday life, and the guidance needs of the patient and their family. • Identifies the care needs of the surgical patient and is able to plan, implement and evaluate pre- and post-operative nursing care. • Utilises theoretical knowledge to select the main methods of assistance in the care of the surgical patient. • Understands the role of the nurse as part of the multidisciplinary care team looking after the surgical patient. • Is able to document and communicate verbally to ensure continuity of care for the surgical patient.

Qualifications
30 ects of first year studies completed, including Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations. Participation in course Intravenous Fluid Therapy and Clinical Laboratory Tests.
