Objective

This course is aimed at students who are native speakers of Finnish or whose Finnish language proficiency level is C1. The course is bilingual combining Finnish and English – approximately half of the course is taught in English and the other half in Finnish. Some of the teaching sessions will combine the use of both languages within one session to mimic authentic multilingual communication situations.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student:

1. is able to make conscious choices about applying communication strategies in different academic and professional contexts
2. is able to adapt their language use according to the communication situation
3. is able to collaborate in teams, negotiating to solve problems and presenting information clearly and concisely
4. is able to give and receive constructive feedback.
5. is able to critically reflect on communicative practices from the perspective of critical multiculturalism
6. has acquired strategies for the ongoing learning of communication skills and spoken English.

Content

This course emphasizes the importance of plurilingual and pluricultural competence as part of students’ academic and professional expertise. The course will focus on developing skills and strategies for negotiation, problem solving, presenting and collaborative teamwork in contexts typical for social work professionals. Attention will be given to reflections and discussions around critical multiculturalism, exploring power dynamics that shape and are shaped by communication practices.
