Objective

After completion of the course the student is able to
- recognize social work as a global, glocal and local profession and discipline that crosses boundaries
- outline cultural and ethnic diversity and phenomena related to it on the societal, community and individual levels
- outline basic concepts related to multicultural social work
- obtain knowledge needed in professional encounters in culturally diverse working environments.

Active participation and assigned activities.

Accomplishment methods

Participation in the Summer School and its activities. Online meetings, reflective assignments, lectures, panel discussions, student panels and group dialogues during the lecture week, and optional excursions.

Content

In the course, the students will be orientated to glocal and cultural issues in social work. They will be familiarized with phenomena related to these glocal and cultural issues and ways of conceptualizing them, and with how social work is shaped in the glocal environment.

Teaching methods

The University of Alicante, Spain, organizes online lectures on the theme “International dialogues on social work, social services and social policy”, which the exchange students of the University of Lapland have an opportunity to participate. The online conferences include themes of

-globalization and post-industrial societies,
-social work in an internationalization context,
-evolution of welfare,
-social work outside occident and
-challenges of social work at global level.

The lecturers of the conference series come from universities in Spain, Germany, the U.S. and Finland. The language of instruction is English (and in the conferences, also Spanish).

To complete this course and acquire 5 ECTS, students will be required to watch the recording of the first conference and participate the four other conferences. In addition, they will complete a lecture diary by 29.5.2024.

Target group: Exchange students in social work. Maximum number of participants from the University of Lapland is 10.

Assignment: Lecture diary of approximately 10 pages. In the lecture diary, students are expected to reflect on the contents of the conferences and use the course literature.

More information on the assignment and literature will be available by the end of February 2024.

Performance corresponds to the assignment, manifesting comprehension and a skill to analyse and justify.

Fail
Performance is highly deficient or erroneous. The work may be based on serious misunderstandings.
