Tavoitteet

After successful completion of the course, the doctoral researchers will be able to:
• understand the theoretical foundations of design
• understand the main critique towards these theories
• apply different theories of design into their own research topic

Toteutustavat

The course will consist of introductory lectures (1-2 hours), online tutoring (2x2hours), and essay writing and peer-review writing. This is an online course.

Suoritustavat

To successfully complete the course, the doctoral candidate needs to:
• actively participate in the course
• complete assignments required by the professor i.e. essays and written peer-review report

Sisältö

The purpose of the course is to understand the main theories in design:
• different approaches to design process (human-centered design, design thinking and British Design Council’s Innovation framework including double diamond)
• considering human needs in design (usability, empathy, emotion and experience)
• contribution of users and use of power in design process
• modes of designing with users (co-design, participatory design, design for services)
• different methods when designing with users (explorative, generative, and evaluative methods)
• pluriversal turn in design (ecocentric design, decolonizing design)
The readings included in the course introduce different theoretical readings in design. Some of the readings will be presented during the first lectures. The students will choose the essay topic related to their doctoral thesis. They’ll do literature research to define the main concepts and discussions. After this they’ll also present critique published addressing these theories. Students will receive guidance through literature research. The students will write essays that will be peer-reviewed during the course.
