16.5.2024 13-15 ORIENTATION TO THESIS SEMINAR: Discussion about the forthcoming thesis seminar and instructions for writing the idea paper for thesis

16.9.2024 9:15-15 OPENING SEMINAR: Introduction of the thesis seminar and writing the master's thesis. Discussing the idea papers in smaller groups. Before the opening seminar, the student writes an idea paper, reads general instructions in Moodle, and reads some of the previous master's thesis written in tourism research at the University of Lapland.

2.10.2024 12:15-15 LITERATURE REVIEW: How to find and learn from previous research on the phenomenon at hand?

23.10.2024 9:15-12 THEORY: The role of theoretical concepts and theoretical framework in research. Before this meeting, the student learns about theory from Moodle, writes a paper of theory in one's own research, and reads the papers submitted by the other members of the group.

6.11.2024 9:15-12 METHODOLOGY AND RESEARCH ETHICS: Discussion on methodology and research ethics in academic research. Before the meeting, the student studies the materials in Moodle, writes and submits a paper on methodology, and reads the papers shared in the thesis group.

20.11.2024 9:15-12 ACADEMIC WRITING: The student writes and submits a literature review (5 pages) before the meeting and reads carefully the comments by their supervisor. During this workshop, the student continues to work with the literature review on one's own computer.


27.11.2024 9:15-12 RESEARCH CLINIC: Individual meeting with one's supervisor

11.12.2024 9:15-15 FINAL SEMINAR: Presenting, acting as an opponent, and discussing the first drafts of the thesis. Before the final seminar, the student submits the first draft of the thesis and prepares to act as an opponent to a fellow student's work.

Tavoitteet

After completion of the seminar the student is able to
- outline the different phases of the thesis process
- develop the theoretical and methodological perspective of the thesis
- present one's research and defend it orally
- comment on and evaluate other's research
- conduct a literature review.

Workshops and independent work. Participation in the research seminar is compulsory.

Sisältö

The thesis seminar consists of a lecturers and workshops. The seminar supports the start of the thesis process. During the seminar, the student develops their research plan and starts writing the thesis. Towards the end of the seminar, the student has developed a draft of the theoretical and methodological part of the thesis. Data collection and analysis is done after the end of the seminar under the assistance of the supervisor.

Oppimateriaalit

Learning materials are gathered to the Moodle-platform. The materials include recorded lectures, slides, and general articles on conducting an academic research. Each student will search and gather literature that is relevant to their own thesis. 


Opetusmenetelmät

Teaching in the thesis seminar consists of online lectures, materials in Moodle platform, workshops (in person or online), and personal supervision.

The thesis seminar includes an orientation seminar (2 h) in May, an opening seminar (6 h) in September, and final seminar in December (6 h). The seminar workshops are divided into the following themes: literature review (3 h), theory (3 h), methodology and research ethics (3 h), and academic writing (3 h).The student and supervisor meet once in an individual meeting (0,5-1 h).

In the between and during the seminar workshops, the student works independently by searching and reading relevant literature, developing a research plan, and writing the master's thesis. In the final seminar, the student presents the first draft of the introductory chapter of the thesis and has the role of an opponent to another student's work.

Thesis seminar requires independent and long-term commitment to the chosen research task.

Arviointikriteeri, hyväksytty/hylätty

Fail: Performance is highly deficient or erroneous. The work may be based on serious misunderstandings.

Pass: Performance corresponds to the assignment, manifesting comprehension and a skill to analyse and justify.

Lisätiedot

The main thesis supervisor is chosen based on the idea paper that the student submits before the opening seminar in September. During the thesis seminar, the student will write the first draft of the introductory chapter of the master's thesis, and then continue to collect and analyse empirical material after the thesis seminar. The supervisor assists the student to develop and follow a research plan. The supervision continues with workshops throughout the Spring term.
