Tavoitteet

The course introduces students to the multispecies approaches in social sciences, and particularly to emerging subfield of tourism research concerned with the interconnectedness of tourism and more-than-human world. The aim of the course is to create understanding on multispecies issues in the tourism industry, and to reflect on issues of mutual care and wellbeing in the midst of ecological crises. The course also encourages students to be able to make connections with other fields of research as well as other contemporary issues. Core questions being raised through the course include: What is changed when perspectives are shifted towards ideas of multispecies wellbeing in tourism contexts? What are the implications, challenges, and opportunities of this change e.g. for tourism development?

After completion of the course the student is able to
- identify research themes relevant to multispecies studies
- iIdentify stakeholders engaged in multispecies wellbeing in tourism contexts
- describe current challenges, blind spots, or areas of interest within the wider field of tourism when discussing multispecies wellbeing
- analyse the current methods, methodologies, or approaches towards considering multispecies wellbeing within tourism
- critically reflect on tourism ethics from multispecies perspectives.

Sisältö

Multispecies approaches in social sciences and in tourism research, relational wellbeing in tourism environments (e.g. wellbeing impacts of being in nature and animal wellbeing), care, multispecies hospitality, proximate methodologies in tourism.

Opetusmenetelmät

Pre-work (readings, videos + reflection questions) 30 hours; Seminar (keynote presentations, group discussions, film screening) 12 hours; Independent study 42 hours; Essay 5 pages.

Arviointikriteerit, tyydyttävä (1)

Fail (0): Performance is highly deficient or erroneous. The student fails to identify research themes relevant to multispecies studies and current challenges related to multispecies wellbeing in tourism. The work may be based on serious misunderstandings.

Sufficient (1): Performance corresponds poorly to the assignment or is lacking in scope. The student merely lists things related to the context of multispecies studies. The work may contain errors or obscurities.

Satisfactory (2): Performance is superficial. Student addresses issues related to multispecies studies one-sidedly, but is able to point out connections and challenges.

Arviointikriteerit, hyvä (3)

Good (3): The students is able to identify analyse current themes, challenges and approaches related to multispecies studies in tourism context. The work may contain some deficiencies.

Very good (4): Performance corresponds to the assignment, manifesting comprehension and a skill to analyse and critically reflect on issues related to multispecies studies and wellbeing in tourism context. The student has addressed the issue comprehensively.

Excellent (5): Performance delineates an extensive whole and the student can apply multispecies studies approaches in a multifaceted way or place it in various contexts. The work manifests independency and insight, and it is a flawless entity that involves justified thinking or critical contemplation. The work is well written and implemented.
