Objective

Learning objectives
Upon completing this module, the student should be able to discuss in depth various questions related to international human rights law.

Execution methods

A) (electronic) literature exam on Shelton Dinah L., Advanced Introduction to International Human Rights Law (2nd ed., Edward Elgar 2020). The examination is available as an e-exam in the electrical exam service (called EXAM).

B) Lectures and/or seminar.

You can get credits for the module from:

A) 3 ECTS: (electronic) literature exam
B) 1-2 ECTS: lectures and/or seminar

You can choose either part A and/or part B.

Content

Fundamentals of international human rights law as well as more specific regulation in the area.

Teaching methods

Aim After completing this course, students will have learned
- the basics of human rights protection from an international perspective
- to identify key sources of human rights, as well as the most relevant international legal instruments
- specifics of some fundamental human rights and their possible limitations

Contents:
Topics covered include:
- philosophy and history of human rights
- key human rights instruments
- introduction to right to life, freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly, among others
- limitations to human rights
