Tavoitteet
Learning objectives
The course addresses broadly the field of Public International Law. It is aimed to offer a general picture of the system of Public International Law and the influence thereon by international politics. Upon completing this module, the student should be able to
- explain the general system of Public International Law
- describe the sources of Public International Law
- identify subjects of Public International Law, as well as their authorities and responsibilities
- discuss the role and duties of the UN- analyze the role of human rights
- assess the international regulation of use of force
- tell about specific branches of Public International Law.
Toteutustavat
A) Lectures and/or seminar
B) Written examination on Klabbers Jan, International Law (3rd ed., Cambridge 2021), Parts I-II (pp. 1-320). The written examination is available as an e-exam in the electrical exam service (called EXAM).
Suoritustavat
You can get credits for the module from:
A) 1-3 ECTS: lectures and/or seminar
B) 3 ECTS: (electronic) literature exam
You can choose either part A and/or part B.
Sisältö
The normative nature and substantive contents of international law: its sources and subjects, state jurisdiction and responsibility, protection of human rights, protection of the environment, organisation and functions of the United Nations, peaceful settlement of disputes, linkage between international law and international politics.

Opetusmenetelmät
The 3 ECTS course consists of lectures in person & lecture recordings (+ a lecture test) and a group work treaty drafting exercise to be presented in a seminar (in person). The lecturers are Professor Emeritus Matti Niemivuo and Professor of Public International Law Lotta Viikari, who also organize the seminar together.
You can use the 3 ECTS from this course either for the study module ONEVAL0029 LAW OF INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS or OTMEVAL0021 PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL LAW.
Minimum group size: 8 students.
Registration for the course: in Peppi by 28.8.2022, code OTMEVAL0021 (also for students using the course for ONEVAL0029).
