Most of the content for the course is given to the students during the lessons, and the homework tasks are given at the conclusion of the lessons.

Tavoitteet

This course emphasizes the importance of communicative competence as part of students’ expertise. The course will focus on developing skills and strategies for negotiation and problem solving, collaborative teamwork and intercultural communication.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student
1) is able to make conscious choices about applying communication strategies in different academic and professional contexts.
2) is able to collaborate in groups, negotiate to solve problems, and present ideas and information clearly and concisely.
3) is able to give and receive constructive feedback.
4) is able to consider the effect of culture in communication situations.
5) has acquired resources for the ongoing learning of communication skills and spoken English.

Group-oriented learning, independent work.

Active participation, required attendance, successful completion of the course assignments.

Sisältö

Students will have an opportunity to develop academic communication skills, field-specific vocabulary and confidence through focused pair and small-group activities.

Oppimateriaalit

Most of the materials used in the course are provided by the teacher; students are required to conduct their own research and preparation outside of classroom hours.

There is no formal exam for this course. There is a final task that must be done in the last lesson of the course; if a student misses this lesson for reasons of illness, the task can be rescheduled.

Toteutuksen valinnaiset suoritustavat

This is a course designed to improve students' speaking and interaction skills, and as such, students must attend classes on campus. There is no substitute for that.

It is not possible to complete the course by writing essays, etc., as they are not equivalent to the hours of dedicated speaking practice that occur in the classroom.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus

The main part of this course is the attendance and participation in classes on campus, totalling 24 hours.

In addition, there are tasks to be completed at home, ranging in time between 30mins-2hrs per task. The final task is longer, and students can expect to spend between 2-6hrs preparing for that. The information for the final task is given in the first lesson, which means students have plenty of time to spread out the work for the final task over several weeks.

Student attends the classes a minimum of 80%.
Student participates in the activities by speaking English actively.
Student satisfactorily completes all of the homework tasks and is prepared before every lesson.
Student satisfactorily completes the final task in the last lesson of the course.

Pass/fail based on completion of the tasks, active participation, and meeting the required attendance.
