Tavoitteet
Learning results:
The student understands the value of tourism, forestry, rural business and reindeer husbandry in the economic life in Lapland (GNP, number of employees and multiplier impacts). (S)He knows the meaning of nature conservation to economic life in Lapland and the need and means of land use conflict management.
The student learns to know reindeer as an artic animal. (S)He knows the history and organizations of reindeer husbandry. The student learns to know detailed step by step description of reindeer herding as a source of livelihood. (S)He understands how the incomes of reindeer herders are compiled.

Sisältö
Aim: The aim of the course is to give a multi-disciplinary overview to reindeer herding in the Northern Fennoscandia, its ecological preconditions, cultural and socio-economic significance and contemporary questions. The course also focuses on other economic sector in Lapland region such as mining, tourism and forestry.
Contents: The course consists of two parts: reindeer herding and other economic sectors. Reideer herding consists of following themes: a general overview of reindeer herding as livelihood, biology of reindeer, reindeer herding cultures, environmental questions and socio-economical aspects.
Other economic sectors: Bioeconomy, Infrastructure, Future of the Arctic, Tourism and mining overview
Emphasis may vary yearly according to available lecturers. An excursion is also included in the course.

S/he shows very good knowledge on the reindeer as an arctic animal, the of reindeer herding as a source of livelihood and the economics in reindeer husbandry. The student participates in the lessons actively and shows analytical, reflective and critical approach in all his/her activities. All the assignments are performed according to the instructions.
