Tavoitteet

The course offers knowledge of gender dimensions operating in the north. It discusses gendered aspects of northern livelihoods, communities, traditions and histories, by viewing the Arctic area. After completion of the course the student is able to:– Recognize question of gender being relevant to the North and the Arctic– Discuss gendered features of the northern cultures and societies

Toteutustavat

Lectures and seminar (4+6h), writing an essay and active participation to the seminar.

Suoritustavat

Active participation to the seminar and successful completion of the essay.

Sisältö

The course includes seminar and self-study in a form of writing an essay. The topic of gender in the north and the course literature are presented in the first seminar meeting (2h). The specific focus of the introduction is on the intersectionalities of gender and ethnicity taking place in the North. For the second seminar meetings (4h), students will submit their initial essays to be then presented, discussed and guided further in the seminars.
