Objective

After completing the course, the national or international student tutoring organiser will be familiar with the structure of the University's degrees, the services available to students and will be able to describe the main goals of university studies. The tutoring organiser will understand the importance of peer support and his/her role in successful student tutoring. The tutoring organiser should be able to plan, lead and evaluate his or her tutoring group as well as his or her own peer support. The tutoring organiser will be able to lead a small group and work as part of a network as well as understand the nuances of intercultural communication and have the ability to effectively work with students from different backgrounds. After acting as a tutoring organiser, the student will be able to manage a tutoring group and have skills in project management.

Content

The course is intended for Tampere University students acting as student tutoring organisers. A tutoring organiser is a peer instructor for new student tutors who helps new students and tutors to integrate into the student community and studies. The tutoring organiser plans and coordinates all tutoring activities together with tutors. He or she also takes part in planning the initial study guidance and counselling services together with degree programme representatives, study services and the student union.

Requirements: Participation in the tutoring organiser trainings. Taking care of the coordinatory tasks (in the subject association/guild) required for international tutoring. Answering a questionnaire for tutoring organisers towards the end the tutoring period. The questionnaire link will be sent to tutoring organisers when the questionnaire opens and replies need to be submitted.The questionnaire includes a reflective essay in which a student reflects upon e.g. how and what they have learned based on the situations they have encountered in coordinating their subject association’s/guild’s tutoringhow the tutoring organiser experience has given them skills or benefitted their preparation for the working lifeThe credits for a tutoring organiser will be given by the tutoring organiser’s own programme/faculty.
