Objective

After completing the course, the student will be familiar with the services available to international students and with the administrative matters which new international students need to take care of. Besides being able to lead a small group and work as part of a network, he or she will have an understanding of the nuances of intercultural communication and have the ability to effectively work with students from different backgrounds. He or she will also understand the importance of peer support and his/her role in helping new students integrate into the academic community. After acting as an international tutor, the student will be able to manage a small group, work in a multicultural group and have skills in project management.

Content

The course is intended for Tampere University students acting as international student tutors for new international students. An international tutor is a peer instructor for a new student and helps the new student to integrate into the new culture, the student community and studies. Tutoring is at its most active during the first weeks of the semester but continues throughout the academic year/semester.

Requirements: Participation in the tutor trainings and acting as a tutor. Answering a tutoring questionnaire towards the end the tutoring period. The tutoring questionnaire link will be sent to tutors when the questionnaire opens and replies need to be submitted.The questionnaire includes a reflective part where a student reflects upon e.g. how and what they have learned based on the situations they have encountered in tutoring;how the tutoring experience has given them skills or benefitted their preparation for the working life.For degree students, the credits for tutoring will be given in the tutor’s own programme/faculty. For exchange student tutors, the credits will be awarded by the International Mobility Team.
