Objective

The student will be able to • define concepts and explain the fundamentals of thermodynamics related to phase equilibrium, phase changes and mixtures, and apply them for thermodynamic processes • apply free energies for thermodynamic processes • recognize phenomena and applications related to thermodynamics and explain their theoretical background. The course develops the following generic skills: critical thinking, identification and development of one's own expertise, and interaction and communication.

Content

Phase equilibrium and phase changes. Ideal and nonideal mixture. Dilute solution thermodynamics. Chemical equilibrium.

Qualifications

Course Thermophysics a or comparable background knowledge.

Materials

Course book: Daniel V. Schroeder, An Introduction to Thermal Physics, Addison Wesley Longman, 2000. Information about other learning materials will be given at the start of the course.

Further information

The course will be held every second academic year. The course will be held next time in spring 2024. This course is intended for the following student groups: • Undergraduate students in Technical Physics (BSc) • Undergraduate students in Applied Physics (BSc) • this course is open to everyone who meets the prerequisites

Execution methods

Lectures 20 h, practices 9 h, self-contained studies 52 h.

Accomplishment methods

Study methods: exercises, project work and written exam. Evaluation criteria: exercises, project work and written exam. More detailed information on study methods and evaluation criteria will be informed at the beginning of the course.
