Objective

Learning outcomes: The aim of the course is to help new students begin studies and develop the know-how and skills needed in university studies. After completing the course, students have learned about university studies and the scientific community. The student is able to: - apply the study practices of the University of Eastern Finland in their studies - identify development needs related to their studies and develop their study skills - recognize and manage feelings of stress related to study situations - act according to the ethical guidelines and rules of the academic community - use online tools provided by the University of Eastern Finland to support studies, including the Moodle online learning environment.

Content

Before 1 August 2022: In the course, students become familiar with university studies and ethical guidelines and learn about doctoral studies and the scientific community at the university. Students also learn how to use the most common online tools for studies, as well as skills in stress management and how to evaluate and develop their learning. Starting 1 August 2022: The course introduces the academic environment and the scientific community of the UEF, as well as ethical guidelines of studying. The course also familiarizes the student with student well-being, time management and evaluation and development of one’s learning abilities.

Qualifications

Participation requires no prior studies at the University of Eastern Finland.

Before 1 August 2022 Study methods: Lectures and online learning, including the given learning assignments. Completing the given course assignments is compulsory. Starting 1 August 2022 Study methods: Participating in lectures and online learning. Independent studying, including the given learning assignments. Completing the required course assignments is compulsory. Before 1 August 2022: Evaluation criteria: Pass/fail. To pass the course, students must complete the course assignments with a pass grade. Starting 1 August 2022: Evaluation criteria: Pass/fail.
